“This home office was designed for a young small business owner. She started her graphic design company towards the beginning of the pandemic as a way to bring in extra money by working from home. When her business started to grow, she decided to pursue graphic design full time, and wanted to transform her spare bedroom into a functional and cohesive workspace where she could both create and conduct business.

For a workspace, I think it’s important to find the right balance between a feeling of invigoration and serenity. These characteristics may seem contradictory, but I think they each play an important role in creating a harmonizing space, especially for a creative work environment. I wanted the client to feel inspired and incite creativity, but also have a sense of feeling calm and collected. To achieve this, I started with a very clean base with neutral colors and botanical motifs. Then I introduced a gentle wash of pink in the rug and wallpaper to bring in warmth and energy into the space, which I balanced with splashes of mint and water imagery to be cool and grounding.

I always start with one piece that really speaks to me, and build the entire design around that. For this project, it all started with the buffet. The softness and warmth of the beech wood provided the perfect base for the mother-of-pearl floral inlay to really shine, and the brass hardware was the cherry on top. This one piece seemed to encapsulate everything I wanted this space to feel like: warm and lively, soft and feminine, light and organic, with just a little touch of luxe.

One of my favorite things about design is that it’s a very practical art form. For this project, I wanted to make sure that this office met all of the client’s organizational and functional needs. The final design managed to provide ample storage and versatile workspace for the creative entrepreneur.”
